Capital Region Medical Center

The Challenge:

Capital Region Medical Center is a 100 bed, community based, teaching hospital that provides a full menu of services including surgical, obstetrics, pediatrics and rehab. Capital Region located in Jefferson City, Missouri has over 2500 users utilizing the MEDITECH healthcare information system.

For Capital Region to fully utilize their MEDITECH Test environment for bug/enhancement code changes it was crucial to have their Test dictionaries current. With the integrated nature of the MEDITECH dictionaries they found early on that having any data that was not current across Test and Live could severely prohibit accurate testing and patient safety. To keep their databases current their already short staffed IT personnel were manually populating the dictionaries but this was only if they knew about the data discrepancies.

The Solution:

With technology consistently evolving, Capital Region knew there had to be a tool in the marketplace to assist with the laborious process of synchronizing their MEDITECH Test and Live dictionaries. After evaluating system vendors, Capital Region selected the Summit InSync product as they found it provided the most comprehensive extraction, analysis and update tool for their IT staff. Their staff was now able to work on priority projects while also feeling confident that their testing ground was accurate and a true reflection of their Live database.

Capital Region has seen additional value with the Summit InSync product as they begin to implement advanced clinical modules. Recently Capital Region installed the MEDITECH Operating Room Management module which relies heavily on various Materials Management dictionaries such as Stock and Items. It became crucial to synchronize all MM dictionaries prior to the building and testing of the ORM module.

Another great feature of Summit InSync is the ability to build Live dictionaries from scratch prior to any module go-live. This is accomplished through the tool by simply extracting and analyzing entries in the Test database and then updating to Live. This functionality was also utilized frequently at Capital Region.

Engagement Highlights:

  • Hospital enterprise use of Summit InSync with a total of 10 dictionaries being synched.
  • Capital Region uses Summit InSync to synchronize a variety of critical dictionaries including dictionaries that are interdependent on one another. (Example: Materials Management and ORM)
  • Reduces the intense amount of time manually moving dictionary changes from test to live. This results in huge time savings and reallocation of IT resources.

“The Summit InSync product has provided an easy yet robust tool that allows our IT analysts the ability to free up time to work on priority projects. We no longer spend hours updating our MEDITECH dictionaries. The extraction, analysis and update process built into the Summit InSync product provides excellent flexibility for managing our MEDITECH Test and Live databases.
