Ephraim McDowell

Ephraim McDowell Health is an integrated healthcare delivery system that serves more than 146,000 residents from six counties in central Kentucky. At the core of the system is Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center, a 187-bed, not-for-profit hospital that was established more than 110 years ago. The Ephraim McDowell Health system also includes Fort Logan Hospital in neighboring Lincoln County (Stanford).

Ephraim McDowell Health Uses Technology from Summit Healthcare For Improved Reporting Capabilities and Workflow Automation

The information systems department at Ephraim McDowell Health implemented the Summit Print Manager and the Summit Scripting Toolkit in order to be able to produce reports for downtime disaster recovery and also for workflow automation. With several hundred financial and clinical reports spooling out each day, they needed a highly efficient, reliable solution to maximize their productivity. Without the Summit Print Manager, they would have to manually run hundreds of individual NPR reports daily, taking up a large amount of resources in their IT department.

Some of the reports spooled from the Print Manager are sent to a Web-based product, and others are printed to network printers. Ephraim McDowell Health uses the Summit Print Manager and Print Manager Plus for most of the reporting but use the Summit Scripting Toolkit when the variable(s) within a report are not constant. The Summit Print Manager and Summit Scripting Toolkit are designed with an easy-to-use front end that allows any trained user to be successful with scripting and scheduling reports. With the Summit Script Recorder and the script tags, even Ephraim McDowell Health employees without any programming experience are able to generate scripts that automate various routine tasks throughout their hospital.

Engagement Highlights

Automated Extraction and Entry from one system to another - Summit Scripting Toolkit can accept data from application screens, files and databases (SQL, Access, etc.), and use them as sources to script information into the destination system.

Summit Print Manager - Designed to save users time by automating the execution of reports which otherwise would have to be manually run, the Summit Print Manager is an application, not a developer tool, making the process of scheduling reports easy.

  • Printing/Download – Includes the automatic selection of a printer, with guaranteed printer selection and a variety of outputs, including .PDF.
  • Reporting – Includes audit and error logging, a detailed trace log and the e-mailing of reports on success and failure in reports.
  • Exception Handling/Notification – Includes the automatic handling of MEDITECH errors, a configurable timeout mechanism, the e-mailing of reports on success and failure in reports, automatic monitoring and management of submerged reports and a database backup of all the report parameters.
  • 3 Step Setup – The setup of reports takes less than ten minutes. The process begins by configuring the login, navigation and printer parameters. Once you save the report configuration, it can be tested from the same configuration tool. If the report runs correctly, you're ready to schedule the date, time and frequency of its execution. If the report does not run properly, you modify and test again.
  • Logging and Notification - All transactions of the spooler are logged to assist in the tracking and maintenance process. Logging includes the start and finish time of each report as well as a detailed summary of each action taken by the spooler to run the report. Notification is done through SMTP (e-Mail) and can be set up to notify an unlimited number of parties due to failure and/or success.
  • Flexible Printing Options - Some reports are to be printed, while others are downloaded or e-mailed. Summit supports all of the transaction types available from the MEDITECH print dialog, and built-in support for Abode PDF Distiller is included.
  • Report Distribution - With the newest generation of report management applications for MEDITECH Client Server sites, the Summit Print Manager now includes not only the ability to predefine and schedule reports for printing but also allows users to distribute reports to multiple locations to reduce overhead and ensure consistency.

Testimonials

We have a long-standing relationship with Summit Healthcare beginning with data conversions in 2001. We find that Summit Healthcare products are extremely reliable as well as being user friendly. We purchased the Summit Print Manager (2005) followed by SST (2005) and then the integration suite engine (2006). With the Print Manager, we were able to have nearly 100 different reports spooling out to a web based product or printing to a network printer within the first week. Our report printouts are so reliable that we do one quick morning check on them and don’t worry about them again until the next morning. The scripts that we have running through the scripting tool are equally as reliable. We use the Summit Print Manager for those reports where we would enter the same variables all the time and SST when the variables change. We have also used SST with other databases besides Meditech. As for the Summit Integration Suite engine, we have multiple ADT feeds (g-Med Endoscopy suite, Access E-Forms repository, Xtend PBX system, Phillips fetal monitor, etc.), as well as an order/result feed for a reference lab product currently running through the engine. Tomorrow, we will be running our current Meditech ITS feed for PACS and voice recognition transcription product through the engine to create a tap for our new cardiology PACS system.
