Boulder Community Hospital Implements Summit Healthcare Toolsets For Colorado HIE Integration

Summit Healthcare, a leader in healthcare system integration and task automation, today announced that Boulder Community Hospital has successfully implemented Summit Healthcare’s integration tools to participate in the Colorado Regional Health Information Organization’s (CORHIO) Health Information Exchange (HIE). Boulder Community Hospital’s adoption of Summit’s Express Connect interface engine resulted in rapid, seamless integration with CORHIO and its HIE technology partner, Medicity. In its second phase of this implementation, Boulder Community Hospital will leverage Summit’s physician office integration tool, Provider Exchange, to deepen its collaboration with CORHIO.

“A major HIE integration project of this kind can be a very complex undertaking and it requires strong leadership and the right tools to be successful,” said Susan A. Clark, RHIA, Sr. Project Manager and Privacy Officer, CORHIO. “Boulder Community Hospital’s integration partner, Summit Healthcare, came to the project well-prepared. With their technology and deep MEDITECH integration experience, we were easily able to integrate Boulder Community Hospital’s systems with the Medicity platform.”

Boulder Community Hospital previously partnered with Summit Healthcare for its integration and automation services as the hospital underwent a MEDITECH 6.0 migration. When Boulder Community Hospital was embraced by CORHIO as a flagship adopter of its HIE services, the hospital’s experience with Summit Healthcare proved to be a valuable commodity.

“After working with Summit Healthcare on our successful MEDITECH 6.0 migration, we knew just where to turn to spearhead our efforts with CORHIO,” said Linda Minghella, Chief Information Officer, Boulder Community Hospital. “Summit Healthcare’s tools have made our path to integration with CORHIO fast, simple and cost-effective.”

Phase one of the integration enabled Boulder Community Hospital to quickly transmit data from MEDITECH systems via Summit Express Connect in five areas – admissions, lab and microbiology results, blood bank and pathology results, transcription reports and radiology reports – to CORHIO’s HIE partner, Medicity. Boulder Community Hospital will also take part in a second phase with CORHIO by implementing Summit Provider Exchange to facilitate bi-directional integration for orders and results with physician offices and clinics.

“Our experience working with Summit Healthcare to connect Boulder Community Hospital to CORHIO could not have been better,” said Chris Konen, HIE Program Director, Medicity. “Summit Healthcare’s suite of tools is well-suited for integrating with our technology platform. Not only was the Summit team very technically competent, they also understood the business drivers behind the HIE effort and were there whenever we needed them.”

Boulder Community Hospital is a locally owned and operated non-profit hospital system dedicated to meeting the constantly evolving health care needs of Boulder County residents.  Boulder Community is known across Colorado for its clinical excellence in heart care, neurology, orthopedics and cancer care.  Some 560 physicians in 48 medical specialties have privileges at BCH.  BCH has MEDITECH as their primary healthcare information system.

"Health information exchanges are becoming mobilized rapidly," remarked Ted Rossi, CEO, Summit Healthcare.  "We at Summit Healthcare are thoroughly excited that our toolsets are having an impact across the state of Colorado in communicating critical health information."
