Baptist Health Implements the Summit Scripting Toolkit to Increase Productivity and Eliminate Redundant Manual Workflow

Background and Challenge:

Baptist Medical Center (BMC) is a three facility organization providing care to the city of Montgomery, Alabama. Offering over 650+ inpatient beds these facilities provide a wide range of healthcare services and medical specialties. Baptist Medical Center runs the McKesson STAR Information System across all three facilities.

Years ago, Baptist Medical Center saw a need to reduce manual data entry and redundant workflow processes. To combat these inefficiencies BMC employed technical programming staff in their IT department to manually code scripts to automate manual workflow processes however this process was proving to be too cumbersome and costly to manage. The high costs were mainly due to lack of efficiency and low productivity which, in turn, lead to a long turn around time for new scripting projects.

The Solution:

Baptist Medical Center implemented the Summit Scripting Toolkit (SST) to solve their existing technical home grown scripting approach while ensuring that they kept the same level of automation that departments had become accustomed to. The goal with the implementation of SST was to not to eliminate FTE’s but to increase productivity and reallocate resources to work on priority projects. Baptist Medical Center saw a savings of over 16 hrs of manual work each day. BMC is currently running over 20 scripts at the hospital improving processes in the Central Billing, Decision Support, Payroll, Finance and Information System departments. The Summit Scripting Toolkit has replaced manual processes such as 1.) Real-time insurance eligibility verification, 2) Financial ETL processes, 3) Payroll deductions and 4) Various Patient Account Tasks plus many other IT initiatives.

The Summit Scripting Toolkit is a robust, easy to use application that is reliable and stable for scripting into any HIS, Windows or Web based systems. Easy to use features such as the Visual Workflow Designer allow users to define logical segments of their workflow and then drill down to individual tasks providing the user the ability to understand the intended purpose of the script. Also, the logical segments are 100% reusable, thus eliminating time-consuming rework by the user. Scripts are deployed as XML documents, which makes recompiling unnecessary and a great time saver for IT!

Engagement Highlights:

  • Baptist Medical Center was able to save over 16 hours a day of manual work and reallocate necessary FTE’s to work on priority projects.
  • Multiple hospital departments benefit from the automation that the Summit Scripting Toolkit brings to BMC. Manual processes are a thing of the past when it comes to Insurance Eligibility, Financial ETL processes and Payroll deductions. That’s just to name a few!
  • Baptist Medical Center has over 20 scripts currently running with plans to add more.

Testimonials

We are extremely pleased with ease of use and versatility of the Summit Scripting Toolkit. I’ve developed several scripts for a wide variety of tasks. I am eager to begin developing more scripts to be used across the hospital enterprise.
