Summit Healthcare Volunteers at The Greater Boston Food Bank in Support of Company-Wide Philanthropic Initiatives

2018 Marks the 2nd Year Summit Healthcare Gives Back to this Local Organization
Braintree, Mass., August 23, 2018 – Every year, the Executive Team at Summit Healthcare looks for different ways to reach public service and philanthropic goals in order to give back to their surrounding communities. In addition to various monetary donations throughout the year, Summit Healthcare also organizes “A Day of Giving Back” annually when the entire staff at Summit Healthcare coordinates a trip to a local non-profit organization to volunteer their time and efforts.
For the second year in a row, Summit Healthcare selected The Greater Boston Food Bank (GBFB) as the recipient of these efforts. Earlier this month the Summit Healthcare staff, which is comprised of just over 50 employees, spent an afternoon at the GBFB facility in South Boston to lend a hand completing various tasks throughout the warehouse. In addition to volunteering at the facility, Summit Healthcare made a monetary donation in order to supplement their assistance.
GBFB is the largest hunger-relief organization in New England and among the largest food banks in the country. GBFB operates out of their 117,000-square-foot Yawkey Distribution Center in South Boston. This is where over 50 million healthy meals passes through before being distributed across Eastern Massachusetts through 530 member agencies and 70 direct distribution programs. Member agencies include organizations such as:

  • Food pantries
  • Soup Kitchens and Meal Programs
  • Senior Centers, and more

GBFB is committed to increasing their food distribution to provide three meals a day to every person in need in Eastern Massachusetts while supporting healthy lives and healthy communities. Volunteers at The Greater Boston Food Bank play a critical role in helping to end hunger. Each year, more than 23,000 volunteers help to sort, pack, label, and distribute food to hungry families across Eastern Massachusetts. Not only do they help distribute food, but their contributions also help GBFB save over a million dollars in labor costs.
“Every year, the team at Summit Healthcare looks for different ways to give back to our local community here in Boston”, said Ted Rossi, Founder/CEO at Summit Healthcare. “Not only is it an extremely rewarding experience to help individuals in need, it is also a great way to inspire teamwork and collaboration throughout our organization”.
During Summit Healthcare’s day at the warehouse, employees worked on sorting and checking incoming donations for quality, safety, and freshness. The team sorted through over 17,000 pounds of food over the course of the afternoon. Combined with the donation check, Summit Healthcare’s overall support helped with distributing 16,500 meals, which is the equivalent of feeding a family of four every day for five years.
“Volunteers are essential to our operation of providing healthy food to our neighbors in need across Eastern Massachusetts,” said Catherine D’Amato, President and CEO at The Greater Boston Food Bank. “We are so thankful to Summit Healthcare for giving their time to our mission to end hunger here.”
